YouTube almost shut by Pakistan Telecommunication Corp. Ltd. “black holing.”
February 27th, 2008 | by Frenday |For several hours last Sunday a service on Google Inc.’s YouTube Web site was disrupted around the world due to Pakistani government effort’s to block access to a video clip critical of Islam, well a botched effort actully.
I do respect Pakistani government’s effort to block access to a specific YouTube video, which it said was so incendiary it could trigger riots, this refer to a soon-to-be released film made by Dutch politician Geert Wilders which is in my personel opinion (after i check his web site) is insulting Islamic culture.
What i would like to comment is the botched effort by Pakistan Telecommunication Corp. Ltd. (Pakistan’s largest telecommunications company that controls almost all of the nation’s network infrastructure). They send an instructions orders to block the Dutch video on YouTube across its network – “black holing” style, means discarding all data destined for a particular IP Address so that it does not disrupt the flow of data to other IP Addresses, in english it means instructions sent were meant to apply only to traffic within Pakistan. As i said before a botched effort, due to errors in the handling of PTCL’s routers, the message started being replicated on the Internet world-wide, cause other Internet-service providers started having trouble accessing the YouTube site and this continue for several hours.
PTCL is connected to the global Internet through PCCW’s networks, the message was communicated around the world via PCCW Ltd (Hong Kong telecommunications company). Somehow PCCW inadvertently transmitted the message internationally over its network. This is a rare problem.
For a moment i keep wondering, why? why now? why only now Pakistani government’s so desperate want to block this web site? if this was really about the film and Islam, they would have blocked tons of other sites containing hate material against Islam especially Wikipedia. Is there another motive? as we already know YouTube has been flooded with anti-Musharraf videos if that so i think Pakistan’s internet user still can access the web site by using UltraSurf or other proxy software.

What a world lols! mat, i think this is more on his personal interest only i don think it is simply because of the movie..there is lots of medium they can post. why YOUTUBE?
metacafe is one the famous videosite too so..no issues i guess.

ya i think so, the goverment is so desprate to block it…they use hacker style ooo…its like ping to death…but YouTube got a positive effect from this..it shows that they become a very efective multimedia platform to send message…so efective that it can crush a goverment o, till the goverment try to block it…i heard YouTube even got a ringtone says “Go Go Musyaraf” lol sure this is a personel intrest…

If am not mistaken they will tried their very best to give fake traffic to Youtube to let the site down but i dont think google will let that happen….
I still remember what google said
“ALLL THE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ARE WORKING WITH US RIGHT NOW”
so i guess this should be just a small matter for them lols.
