How Can I Transfer Data From One Hard Drive To Another?

May 28th, 2009 | by Frenday |

Our old hard drive (F) has started having problems so my husband bought a new hard drive (C). We put it into our computer and put Windows XP on it using our disk we had when we initially installed it on the old hard drive. We now have both hard drives on the computer, but we need to get all the data from F and put it onto C. How do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

you can transfer data files such as image files, audio and video files and document (word, excel, etc.,) from one drive to another. programs / software i.e. m/s office, photoshop, etc., must be reinstalled if you plan to remove the other hard disk.
you can transfer using the windows explorer’s drag and drop or cut and paste method. this will definitely take sometime as i am assuming you do have lots of files to transfer. to do this…
right click on start and click explore, expand F drive then on the right had pane, right click file(s) or folder(s) to move, click cut, right click C drive and right click paste. you can move one file, multiple files, one folder or multiple folders at a time.
note: use shift key if files re contiguous or Ctrl if they’re not. also, if you’re moving a folder, make sure the C drive does not already have a folder with the same name as you might inadvertently replace contents of folder that you need.
let us know if you need details on how to and i am sure someone can help.
    good luck!!!
tip: move only a few folders at a time.
btw, there is a free trial of software called “Beyond Compare” by scooter software (google it). the software is very good in comparing files and can also be used to move/copy files from one drive to another (very convenient and inexpensive).

You can copy data in the folders one folder at a time try “unstoppable copier” in Google. You can also drag and drop, but locked files that are locked by the OS will cause the basic windows copying to fail.
Also, there are a number of programs for backing up that will restore to a new hard drive. (farstone?)

if you are comfortable with c: prompt commands then type
    at the c: prompt:
    xcopy f:*.* c:
it will take a few hours but it will copy everything from the f drive to the new C: harddrive

You could do this by using lan. Which basickly is hooking two computers together eith the Ethernet cord. (The one you get the internet through. Slightly larger then a phone jack.)
