How Do I Move Itunes From C Drive Of My Computer To An External Hard Drive?

May 29th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I would like to free up space on my hard drive. Is it possible to totally remove iTunes from it and have it on an external hard drive without losing my music? I assume that after I will have to have the external hard drive plugged in to use iTunes.
Thanks from someone who doesn’t have a clue about computers.

You can just drag the file with all the music in it, usually “My Music” in windows, to the external harddrive. Then, when you have the external hard drive plugged in and iTunes open, you go to File > “Add Folder to Library”, and navigate to the file with all of your music in it. When you do this, be sure to uncheck “copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” in Edit > Preferences >Advanced, or else it will move all of your music back onto your main hard drive.

just move your music files to the external. you can still have itunes installed on the c drive, and use the external for storage of your music.
its as easy as drag and drop (at least in windows, dont know about mac these days, i imagine its the same)
