What Are My Options For Installing An External Hard Drive For My New Computer?

May 29th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I purchased a new computer about 6 months ago and I regret not asking for a second internal drive installed for backup.
Short of having a second internal drive installed, are there many good and affordable external hard drives I could consider?
I don’t need a huge capacity second drive. I just need something that is reliable and with greater capacity than the thumb drives I use now.
Would welcome some advice please.

I recently got a western digital external drive, but it crashed with in 6mos, so you may want to stay away from them.
If you are looking for the best way to backup your files, then I would go with an online backup company. It will cost you $5 a month for unlimited space. All your files will be backed up off site, so you never have to worry about them. Also, you won’t have to install any new hardware. Here is a little article I wrote about the best ways to backup your data:http://www.squidoo.com/backup_your_data
I personally use mozy, and it seems to have worked very well for me. If you have less than 2GB, then you can backup your files there for free.

Honestly, no, they aren’t nearly as affordable as placing another hard drive in your system, since they charge more for the enclosure than for the bare HD.
Order 3 of these and you get free shippinghttp://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p…
so 60 bucks would net you 3 sticks, 8 GB each, 24ish gigs.

Western Digital or Sony are good brand names for external drives. I was going to recommend getting a hard drive and buying an powerd inclouser for it… in a funny way, much cheaper if you want huge sized hard drive.
Here are some pretty cheap ones online.http://www.dark-circuit.com/directron/so…

Honestly, for the most performance, it is incredibly easy to install an extra internal hard drive i would be more than happy to to email you to help u install your new hard drive if you can give me the motherboard you’re using, you’ll save a ton of money and increase data transfer speeds.
