What Service Should I Look For To Repair An External Hard Drive?
May 29th, 2009 | by Frenday |I plugged in the wrong AC adapter to my external hard drive, and now it won’t turn on. I need the data on it, so I want to repair it instead of replace it, but all I can find are computer repair services, not hard drive repair services. Who should I go to to get it fixed, or what type of company should I be looking for?

From what it looks like, your best bet might be to go to see team-based computer help services, such as Geek Squad (from Best Buy) or Geeks on Call (http://geeksoncall.com/home/details.shtm... Best to note though that usually these services are not cheap and can run a rather high bill (especially for something like fixing an external hard drive).
For your problem though, a few things might pinpoint the issue. For one, what type of external hard drive is is (Seagate, Western Digital, etc)? Second, do you have any technical experience with dismantling computer parts (if so you might be able to fix it yourself). It seems that you may have shorted out the logic board for your drive (this is the part that communicates between the physical hard drive and the computer – it acts as the intermediary). If so, you could try to open the case of the external hard drive, carefully remove it from the burned logic board, and if you can find a spare external hard drive enclosure that matches your size (3.5 in vs. 2.5in) and bus type (eSATA vs USB), that could be all you need!
Cheers and best of luck!

chances are the HD is still ok and that you just trashed the enclosure.
Easiest way to test would be to just hook the hd up to the power supply in yr pc and plug it into the motherboard. Anyone who’s remotely handy with computers can do this. Its a 5 minute job.
If its the enclosure, all you need is a new one. They cost about $30.
