ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 is the most effective protection you can find to combat today’s huge volumes of Internet and email threats. It provides comprehensive antivirus and antispyware protection without affecting your computer’s performance.
Using advanced ThreatSense? technology, ESET NOD32 Antivirus proactively protects you from new attacks, even during the critical first hours when other vendors’ products aren’t aware the attack even exists. ESET NOD32 Antivirus detects and disables both known and unknown viruses, trojans, worms, adware, spyware, rootkits and other Internet threats. ESET NOD32 Antivirus is also one of the fastest antivirus solutions, so fast you won’t even notice it running. And it’s both incredibly easy to use yet simple to tailor for your specific needs.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, I have recently added superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just changed to Avast antivirus and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

The majority of my customers leave my shop with ESET NOD32 or Smart Security, and SUPERAntiSpyware Professional or FREE. These two pieces of software are the first line of infection removal I use. ESET for viruses and malware, and SAS for esoteric malware and remnants. This is a pretty decent combo for most users and I have an almost zero re-infection rate after switching them over from whatever they were using prior (ahem, Symantec or McAfee). I say “almost zero” because there is always somebody who is intent on surfing as much porn and warez as is humanly possible!
Good luck!

The best free Anti-Virus is Avast Home Edition.
The best pay for Anti-Virus is ESET Nod32. If you want a good firewall choose the ESET Smart Security Suite.
I would use Malwarebytes to supplement either one you choose.
