What Is A Good Antivirus Program Out There To Use?

I purchased a used computer about 10 months ago and the guy had put Norton Antivirus on it before I bought it. It is now up for renewal and I don’t know if I should renew it or not. Is having an antivirus necessary? What are some good programs? Are there any out there that are free to use? Should I stay with the Norton Antivirus? Please help me….I only have 6 more days left with this antivirus left.

    Having an up to date anti-virus is very important (it only takes 2 minutes on average for your computer to be compromised). Norton is bloatware and I would not recommend it at all. If you want to pay for an anti-virus Kaspersky is the best. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but I leave the decision to you (install only one):
    1. AVG Free
    a. A simple interface
    b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
    Cons: low virus detection
    2. Avast!
    a. Real-time protection
    b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
    c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
    Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
    3. Avira AntiVir
    a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
    b. It’s cute umbrella icon
    c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
    Cons: A very sluggish update

    If you have an internet connection, using an anti-virus is a MUST. All anti-virus software, whether free or not, are basically equally efficient. Whatever anti-virus you choose, just check that it has real time protection (can run in background) and updates regularly. If you want a free anti-virus, I will recommend the free version of AVG:http://free.grisoft.com/
    Always use one anti-virus as more than one can cause conflicts on your computer.

    Sow AVAST is good & also Its free. I am also using it.

    I found that free Advira along with free spybot and free adaware protects you very well, zone alarm free firewall is reaaly great.

    norton antivirus is a great resource hog. if you want paid ones u can go for kaspersky or nod32.
    but dont worry, u even have free ones which do great jobs
    you can try out Avast which is very light on the system ..it provides protection for P2P programs and also for internet mail .
    also you can try avira ( but the updates are reeeeaaallly slow + no internet mail protection)
    and of course, AVG free too.

    Non Free:
    NOD32 is hands down the best
    Free:
    AVG Antivirus and AVG Antispyware (Two separate free products) are good enough

    I am using Avast. I like the fact that it updates pretty much daily. Have not tried AntiVir, but might look into it.
    With my experience it seemed like Norton or McAfee used up a lot of system resources to run and bogged down my computers, therefore I got rid of them.
