The antivirus on my copmuter has expired and I am tring to delete it off my system so I can download a different software. How so I remove the program? I have already tried going into the control panel.

uninstall the anti-virus first completely from the control panel
then search for symantec and norton files on ur computer if its a norton anti-virus
if its a mc-afee anti-virus then search for mc-afee and network associates files and delete all those files
then use ccleaner
u will get it from the following linkhttp://www.ccleaner.com/
use it to clean ur computer then install a new anti-virus

Go to “Control Panel” and click the folder “Add+Remove Programs” and remove the expired Anti Virus. By the Microsoft Marketplace you can look all kind a Anti Virus Programs. Some of them free for download. I got one: AVG-Free Edition it’s good, I installed that on my 2 laptops.

Junk like Norton or McAfee sometimes get stuck on the computer. Go to the developers website and search for uninstall. They have both automatic and manual uninstall procedures.
