How Do You Withdraw Money From A Japanese Bank While Traveling Abroad?

July 3rd, 2009 | by Frenday |

I’ve been living in Japan for a few months and I need to return to America for a bit. I get direct-deposit into my Japanese bank account and I won’t receive my money until after I leave the country, but I can’t figure out how to withdraw that money while in America. My bank doesn’t issue checks, traveler’s checks have to be prepaid, and my ATM card doesn’t have a magnetic strip or a credit card logo (it just has a microchip). What can I do?

Do you have an American bank account? Can your bank set up a wire transfer in advance? See if they can do this.
In the US, some banks offer prepaid Visa cards for travelers that may be used anywhere in the world to make purchases or withdraw cash. It’s called Visa TravelMoney, and it’s funded from your bank account. I don’t speak Japanese, but check Visa’s Tokyo webpage to see if they offer something similar. If so, can they be ordered online and pay using your bank information?http://www.visa-asia.com/ap/jp/index.sht…
However, I hope that you are not thinking about flying clear across the world without a credit card. Can they issue you a credit card in time for your trip if you don’t have one?
If you don’t have a US bank account, do you travel here often? If you do, it may be worthwhile to maintain a US bank account. Most banks offer checking accounts with no monthly service fee (Wachovia is the largest who does this, http://www.wachovia.com), you can get your statements delivered by email, and you don’t need to order checks, and you can bank using your debit card (which is often a Visa or MasterCard). Nowadays, almost all banking can be done online. This way next time around you can do my first tip. And if you decide to do this, perhaps you can open an account first thing and call you bank to do a wire transfer then, if they would allow that.
Do you have a trusted friend? How fast does it take to pay a friend through your bank’s online banking service? Perhaps while in the US you can log into your Japanese account, send money to a friend, and have your friend send you the money to the US via Western Union.http://www.westernunion.com/info/homePag…
Hope some of these ideas work.

For the trusted friend or family advice, perhaps another option would be paypal. If you could setup a paypal account before you leave and wire the money to the friend once you are in America, they could go to their bank and withdraw some cash and give it to you. The fees would probably be less than a bank wire transfer.

Why on earth are you doing business with a bank that doesn’t issue checks? Go to your bank, explain the situation, and tell them that they will fix it — or else.
