    Except good AV you still need some security software as an addons which gives you full security.
    I mean software offers you very strong HIPS security i.e. Defensewall (paid), GesWall (free or paid) or Firewall with implementing HIPS i.e. Online Armor (free or paid) either Comodo Firewall PRO (free).
    Thats all. No less, no more.
    My configuration: Avira AntiVir Premium + Online Armor
    scans on-demand: MBAM & SAS.
    And remember – prevention is better than cure!

    Ignore anyone who recomends AVG it has the worst detection rates, and I have cleaned many deeply infected computers with this program installed.

    And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot – Search and Destroy:http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirro…
    Also, for protecting your personal info and files, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_fr…
    All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don’t use up as many resources.
    Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

    avg, avast, avira those are the only free antivirus i can think of
    there are many others but they are not free, just trial softwares
    however there are alot of anti-spyware programs available free
    spyboy s&d
    ad-aware
    superantispyware
    bocleaner
    alot more

    AVG free version is probaby the best free one. even tho its no where near as good as the costly anti virus software
