In Windows, I use Open Office for office tasks, VLC for videos, iTunes for my iPod and music, Vuze for torrents, Foxit for PDFs, ImgBurn for burning cd’s and dvd’s, and AVG for antivirus software. I also run Folding@home when I am not doing CPU intensive tasks. This performs calculations for scientific research on my computer for other groups doing research on problems in protein folding, which is the cause for multiple disorders and diseases.
I have OpenSuSE installed on my systems and dual boot Windows and Linux.
Without knowing what you are interested in, I can’t really suggest other things. If you want free image editing download Gimp. If you want free 3D modeling, download Blender. If you like programming in windows, get Code::Blocks or Visual Studio Express for free.

The Gimp – free image editing
Winamp – awesome media player, CD ripping, streaming, podcast downloads, manages portable media players including iPod.
