Can I Claim Money Paid To A Vet Clinic For Spaying Feral Cats As A Charitable Tax Deduction.?

September 11th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I catch feral cats and take them to a clinic to have them neutered/spayed. The clinic is funded by the Humane Society. I give the clinic $15.00 per cat to help with the expenses, can that money be claimed on my taxes?

    Probably not.
Donations must be to a qualified organization, which the Humane Society probably is, although clinic may or may not be. However any donations are reduced by the value of items or services received. Therefore not deductible. You may want to see if the Humane Society will accept a lump sum donation from you and agree to neuter the feral cats you deliver. Still a little dicey, but right now there’s no chance.

get and keep receipts. it has to be a 501(c) [charitable] organization.
