Is It Customary To Collect Money For The Family When A Person Dies?

November 6th, 2009 | by Frenday |

People do this at work and it seems tacky to me, because I always thought that you should send cards, flowers, food, visit the family, etc., but I am wondering if some people think that collecting money is appropriate. Thanks!

I have no problem donating to a grieving family.

This is usually the case when the family is not well off, to cover funeral and medical expenses.
The family is not trying to get rich. They simple suddenly find themselves tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Yes, unless they are Amish. It just makes it easy on the family to have a little cash because they are going through a rough time and let’s face it, money makes the world go easier.

I agree with you. I find it very tacky, but it seems more and more people are doing it. I would much rather donate to the deceased’s favorite charity.

That is because they are too lazy to do these things that you describe. I think you are right.
