What Is The Best Antivirus Program?

November 16th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I want to install antivirus software on four computers. What brand of antivirus software would be the best and most cost effective? I have Bresnan high-speed cable for an ISP and they have a security manager software that has antivirus but I have found it to be very poorly written and is the source of many problems my computers how have. I want to be protected, I see that McAfee has a 3 computer license, but how is it compaired to Norton or any of the many others.

PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

You can do an online scan for viruses and spyware for free from the major vendors. Some of these require Internet Explorer to run because of Active-X

Its good to run two anti-spywares even if some extra resources are taken.
SuperAntiSpyware does an excellent job. AVG’s full version gets great reviews.

    Anti-Spyware for a cost.
Personally I bought Webroot’s Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG and PCTools anti-viruses the best of the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software

This is my recommendation for anti-virus. Free are good, but they are not as accurate as the top paid anti-virus software

I prefer Norton and have always used it.
I recommend it, but it’s not free.
AVG is free, but you take your chances with it.
another advice, only have one anti-virus on your computer, otherwise they conflict with each other….

    I Wouldt Get McAfee.
They Had Major Problems With Their Previous Programs.
If You Plan On Getting Norton, Get Norton 360, Which is Symantec’s Best Program. Also Consider Trend-Micro PC-Cillin.

I use AVG and also use McAfee Site Advisor (it tells you whether or not a site is good.)

I like AVG spyware and virus along with commando. They are free and as long as you use them with safe browsing and email programs like firefox and thunderbird… you’ll be just fine. Even the best antivirus software is prey to the dumb user who downloads and runs everything in site thinking they are safe.

I personally prefer McAfee to Norton but this is from an issue with a very old version.
I hear alot of complaints on this board about Norton being a bear of a program and I personally feel this is due mainly to user error and misconfiguration.. however, when you get a suite there will always be a lot of extra services running.
I have found McAfee will allow me to turn off the splash screen and configure it so that it does not display informationthal alerts which confuse the average user (and simply drive me bonkers). I don’t like the weight of the program but I do like that it is an all-in-one solution now as most major ones are.. ie, they include antispyware, etc…
If you want a real tech report on the two compared I would say do a google search as on here you will mainly get a lot of biased opinions from non-techs.
I think either would be a good solution for you as long as they’re properly configured and kept updated. If you really want my input on it.. go with mcafee. :)
    Hope that helps.
    Good Luck
