AVG free is a very good free antivirus program. I’ve personally used it for about 4 years now. It’s got a new 8.5 version and I think you should give it a try. Don’t bother with Norton or McAfee, they are overpriced, and use up a tremendous amount of resources on your system.

PC Tools Antivirus is a free download. I don’t know if it’s the best but it’s free. Check it out for yourself:

It’s better to stop thinking “antivirus” programs will protect you.
    Instead you should:
    1. Set up and use almost exclusively a limited user account.http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/arc…
    2. Google the phrase “social engineering” and read the first five results.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22…
    3. Install Windows updates automatically.http://www.updatexp.com/windows-automati…
    4. Use Firefox with the NoScript extension.https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon…
    5. Turn off autorun in Windows:http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securit…

Avira Antivir Personal is great and it’s free… has been with me for more than 2 years already and doing very well… just keep it updated. It’s scanner has a good detection rate… for me it’s the best ..having tried others before like AVG free and Norton which didn’t worked out for me

to help you make up your mind, try reading this: http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/null/5244
    * the top pick for best antivirus in the link above, however, is not anymore available… but then Avira comes in second.
