How Long Does It Take To Get Back Money, From Taxes, From The Federal Governent?

November 27th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I sent in my tax forms for the state and federal government. The federal govt owes me back around $500. I got the money from the state govt, but I’m still waiting on the money from the federal govt.

It depends on how you sent it in, and how you told them to send you the refund. If by direct deposit into your checking or savings account, it takes 8 to 15 days. If you asked them to mail you a check, 4 to 8 weeks. That’s if you electronically filed the return as opposed to mailing it in. If you mailed in the return, add a couple of more weeks.
You can also go to http://www.irs.gov and on the opening page, on the lower left side there is a link called “Where’s my refund?”. Click on that and then enter your Social Security number, how you filed (i.e. Married Filing Jointly; Single; Head of Household, etc), and the exact amount of the refund on the return, and it will tell you about when to expect your refund. Hope this helps.

    Did you actually mail it??
    Or E mail it?
Did you do it yourself? Or file through a company like H&R Block??
All of these factors will matter as to how quickly you will see your $$.

If you mailed in a paper return and asked for a check to be sent to you, it generally takes about 6-8 weeks. Electronic filing with direct deposit to a bank acount takes about 10 days.
