What Is The Best Antivirus Program Which Is Easy On Resources?

December 13th, 2009 | by Frenday |

I have Windows XP SP3 on a Dell Dimenson 8300 2.6 Pentium 4 HT with 256 ram (I will upgrade my RAM shortly). I have dial-up internet to update it. I also want it to be easy on resources, free or not.
Thanks in advance.

Oh definitely, ESET’s NOD32 program is the ultimate beast in antivirus protection, in my personal opinion. Easy on resources. Go try out their Security Suite (gives you Antivirus Protection & Spyware Protection), you can try the product in full function free for 1 month. You simply cannot go wrong here. The price is not bad either, if you should decide on purchasing it.
By the way, i would definitely stay away from Norton ;D
Their program is difficult with system resources.

Other than the 256MB RAM your PC is pretty high end so you won’t have much of a problem with an extra load the antivirus program will add.
I recommend free editions of AVG AntiVirus Free Edition or Avira AntiVir FreeEdition. Both are very easy on your system resources and does not slow your computer down. Avoid Norton AntiVirus by all means. It slows your computer down a great deal. Also, installation and unistallation process is very problematic and very rarely completes clean leaving lots of junk behind. McAfee is not as bad but it is bulky and slows your computer down depending on your configuration.
Go with Avira AntiVir, if you like to catch almost every virus under the sun. AVG is almost as good but it doesn’t catch as many viruses as AntiVir. If you go with Avira becareful if you choose the high security as in some instances it will detect some clean file as a virus infection. I use AntiVir personally and very happy with it.
You can easily find and download AVG and AntiVir free editions through a Google search. They are also lot smaller in size than Norton or McAfee therefore more suitable down download over a dial-up connection. Once you use if for a few months and like the results you can go ahead and purchase a license for the antivirus of your choice…

Get Symantec 10 Corporate. Period. AVG is freaking useless, kasperski is decent but hard on resources. Symantec is hella streamlined and is essentially bullet-proof. It has a 3 second response time to new threats and eats a minimal amount of resources. Dont confuse it with Norton (Not the same thing by a long shot) and run malware bytes before you install anything. (Its free and wicked paranoid, catches even the worst of the worst.)

I think u can use AVG antivirus but use the free AVG if u don’t want to buy. AVG Antivirus have free version and shareware version. The shareware have a complete technology like antivirus and antispyware for workstation and server. Easy to update and not use much resources. I hope my answer can give u a idea to choose what antivirus want to you install.
