January 19th, 2010 | by Frenday |Thanks to those who answered my last question. Apparently I have a virus even though I run Trend Antivirus. Why and why should I pay for another prgram if this one didnt work?

A virus can get through undetected easily if u don’t have a firewall. I suggest these products, they r free and work perfectly.
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com
Spybot: http://www.download.com
Comodo Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com
Good Luck!

Evidendently the virus definitions are not up to date for Trend AntiVirus. Or it may just be a “new” virus that hasn’t been discovered yet.
My suggestion, is don’t limit yourself to just one Antivirus program. There are others out there that offer free scans, try AVG for one.

No product is 100% foolproof and viruses are released into the wild before the antivirus companies can react with updated definitions. A good example of this is the recent Yahoo Messenger virus. It was released and it took AV companies a couple of days to issue updated antivirus definitions.
In addition, some AV products won’t remove spyware. Some spyware products will tag malware as a trojan. There are some good free antispyware products available, here are a few:
====================
Spyware Blocker
This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb…
====================
AntiSpyware Applications
SuperAntispywarehttp://superantispyware.com/
Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl…
AVG AntiSpywarehttp://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tp…
Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a…
(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after installation and updating)

If you open attachments prior to scanning, open downloads before scanning, or click on unsolicited links in emails and messenger, you can be bypassing your security on your own. Best practice is to be prudent when conducting such activities.
