Obviously, if you’re willing to pay a lot of money then Sibelius outclasses them all. The proper version is about £600 or $1000 and the student about half that. But If you don’t want to pay any money at all then Finale Notepad is the best way to go. It only has a few minor drawbacks but as it is free you forget about them.

garage band works for mac. protools is crossplatform, but its gonna cost you. I reccomend ableton live with sample tank and a midi keyboard.
