Does Anyone Know A Good Free Antivirus With Firewall?

January 28th, 2010 | by Frenday |

Not that interested in AVG, but need a decent antivirus with firewall. I used to have Norton 2007, but it slows my average laptop down too much.

    1. For your Anti-Virus……(Always use only 1 A-V…You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict)
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of “paid-for” anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer’s resources. And did I mention that it’s free!
    Download here:http://www.free-av.com/
Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

    2. For your Firewall……….(Always use only 1 software firewall)
A decent free firewall that is PC Tools Firewall Plus. One can either choose “Normal User Mode” Or “Expert User Mode”‘depending on the desired detail of alerts and application custom rules.
It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

The best thing to do is to use a router as your firewall instead. The firewall on a laptop/PC takes up to much processes which can slow your PC.
In addition you should do the following to protect your PC.
McAfee and Norton are two of the top leaders in the anti-virus market place.
But keep in mind that anti-virus is not 100%. You have to do other things.
These are best practices to protecting your computer/laptop:
Perform monthly updates of Microsoft patches
Perform daily updates of your Anti-Virus/Firewall program(s)
Perform daily updates to your Anti-Spyware and Adware program(s)
Perform a weekly scan of your hard-disk for viruses/spyware
Have two separate logins on your computer. One with admin rights and another with regular rights. Always use the login with the regular rights. If someone hacks in during your session. The hacker is limited to the account with regular rights and can’t do much.
Always have a backup of your computer/laptop for restore purposes.
At the end it is up to you. Never visit sites that you don’t recognized and don’t trust your Emails. Always take it with a grain of salt.

If you need freeware security applications, you can choose from the following:
firewall: (listed in order of preference)
    Comodo (http://www.comodo.com ), or
    PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall )
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that’s very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don’t get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
    Avira (http://www.free-av.com )
    AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com )
    AVG (http://free.grisoft.com )
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware: (listed in order of preference)
    Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com ) or
    Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com )
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
    Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org ) for additional removal ability.

My advise to you is to stay away from the suite type software. Having been a beta tester for almost all antivirus/antispyware the all in one suites are not really the best way to go. Logic will tell you that one antivirus or one antispyware as a hard enough time keeing your PC clean.
How do you expect software that acts like a suite to protect you from viruses and rouge incoming packets, plus protecting your personal data from leaving your PC.
Here is an excellent free antivirus from Germany, rated as good as Karpersky. http://www.free-av.com/
Download the free Zone Alarm, free home for personal use, I use may self for ten plus years. Test always leak proof. http://www.zonealarm.com

No firewall, but it’s one heck of an Anti-Virus and it’s free.
Here’s a link to a review of it on cNet:http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F…
So many downloads, average user rating of 4/5, editors rating of 5/5. I’d give it a look if I were you.
    Hope I helped! :)

If you want a good AV / FW then purchase one, none of the free ones are going to do you much good. My recommendations are Kaspersky, PrevX, Zone Alarm, search Google or Yahoo for these.
