Some software licenses allow you to make one copy for your own backup purposes only. Copying for the purpose of giving to someone else would be considered unauthorized copying AND distribution.
If your license prohibits copying, well then, obviously copying would be unauthorized.
Windows activation is one very effective method to prevent unauthorized copying, distribution, and use of windows. There are too many other methods for other software to even mention.
