How Much Money Will I Need To Go Shopping For Newborn?

February 20th, 2010 | by Frenday |

Im having a baby Dec 7th, 2009. My husband and I are on our own when it comes to supplies. (1st baby). I plan to shop when I have money all save up. How much do you think I will need to shop for everything for a newborn all the way to 3 months. After 3 months I think we can handle it.

Diapers will run several hundred themselves. If you plan on breast feeding, you won’t need formula. Plan on at least $100 for a car seat (we got a car seat/stroller combo, which is awesome, for 189, I think). Bottles, another 30.
Gawd! It’s hard to think of everything! :D
Tell you what… check out garage sales. Maybe you won’t get what you need in one weekend, but you’ll save a TON of cash. Get all your newborn and 3 month clothes there (even 6-12 since they’re so cheap). Maybe a couple baby toys, a changing table, baby furniture, clothes hamper, diaper bags, anything you believe wouldn’t be a sterilizing issue (like bottles or formula) – get everything else at your store.
Never get a used car seat, unless you know the person, and they swear the car was never in an accident with the seat in it.
Good luck! Save some money! :D

Are you having a baby shower? Cause you will get things then. But only buy things you will need for the first three months. Like my baby doesn’t like the swing or bouncer to much right now, he starting to like it. but you will for sure need a play pen, stroller, car seat, bassinet, crib, dresser. That will be your most expensive items, you could probably keep that under $1000, it depends on picky you are on brands. Buy like a couple pack of newborn diapers, not to much because your baby might not fit into newborn diapers from the beginning. Buy lots of receiving blankets, I would say to have at least 20 because they spit up on them all the time. You need at least 2-3 weeks worth of onesies because they pee through their diapers a lot. you need pj’s, like the one’s that have the foots so that you don’t need to put them in socks, buy at least a week worth of those, and a couple of little outfits, most of the time you won’t change them out of their pj’s if they haven’t dirtied them and if your not leaving the house. You also need mittens, and some bibs. You could probably keep everything under $2000 if you budget well.

A lot of money!! My husband and I would pick a couple of things up little by little when we went shopping. We tried to buy at least one package of diapers every month (newborn through size 2). Make sure you have onesies. Because your baby will be born during the winter (depending where you live) I would recommend about 10-15 long sleeved onesie and maybe a package of 5 short sleeved. Also about 5 pairs of pants and don’t forget a jacket. As for bottles, I have 10 for my son (he’s on formula now) and that lasts us a day. We wash bottles every night. Then you’ll probably want a swing, bouncy seat, infant tylenol, baby shampoo, lotion, car seat, breast pump (if you need it) etc. I would seriously recommend at least $500 if you’re going to try to get everything at once. That money will go so quickly! If you haven’t already, you should go on to different diaper websites (pampers, huggies, luvs, etc) because you can usually sign up to receive coupons. It’s also the same for formula if you’re going to use formula. Good luck!

Crib/Bassinet/Cot… 50-250 dollars (depending on where you get it, used or new, etc.)
    10-15 bottles……….10-15 dollars
diapers……………….40 dollars (for the total of the first three months
    wipes………………….35 dollars
    clothes(10+ shirts, 10+ pants, 10+ onzies)
    20-50 dollars
    car seat………………..60-100 dollars
    Bath set………………20-50 dollars
    lotion…………………..2-5 dollars
    shampoo……………..2-5 dollars
formula(if not breast feeding) 5-7 dollars
    pump(if breastfeeding) 10-20 dolllars
    TOTAL:174- 577 dollars
add in medical bills, and any other extra items you may want to get the baby, which could bring the total up to a couple thousand dollars
    Congratulations

it depends where you go and what you buy. you can get cheaper stuff or more exp stuff. or you can go to a secondhand store and get really nice stuff super cheap. my husband opted for all the expensive stuff as he had all hand me downs as a kid and since this is our first and only he wants to go all out. but usually all the new hi tech stuff runs you more than the simple stuff. really you dont need a crib as they are more exp than a little bassinett and its smaller and the baby will feel more secure in one. really you just need a crib/bassinett,changing table, dresser, diapers, formula, and all the essentials for grooming. so far we are in the hundreds of dollars. thank goodness for baby showers. usually you get what you need and it saves you alot of money.

It honestly depends. It depends on your budget and your lifestyle. (Baby shopping tends to expand to fit the funds available.)
If money is tight, you can get by on under $200 (assuming you’re in the U.S.) . Breastfeed, co-sleep, shop garage sales and consignment shops for clothes … your biggest expense would be diapers, whether you use cloth or disposible. Those, and a carseat, would be your only significant expense. (You can change baby on a clean towel, bathe her in the sink or the adult tub.)
OTOH, if you plan to formula feed, or need to go back to work and so need to buy a good pump … and plan a fancy nursery with every gee-gaw on the market — you could spend $5,000 or more.
(I chuckle to see the other post saying you need to spend $5,000…)

The good thing here is that you have until December. About a month before school starts, keep an eye out for consignment sale signs in your area. Most places have several within about an hour’s radius, and they’re semiannual–one in the fall, one in the spring. I have a favorite one in my area. At this sale you’re allowed to volunteer for four hours in exchange for getting in early to shop. At that first sale I spent about $400 and got a nice convertible crib, beautiful cradle, bumbo seat, a bunch of clothes, bouncy seat… Heck, I can’t even remember what all I got! My mom and I had to make several trips just to get it all to the car. And later I realized I didn’t really need all that stuff. I could’ve easily gotten by on less money.
The things you REALLY need are a good carseat (I’d recommend a new one) and a place for baby to sleep. You could get a co-sleeper (we got our Arm’s Reach for $60 in good used condition), a crib, a bassinet, or a cradle. There are lots of affordable options.
If you don’t make it to a semiannual sale, check out a consignment shop such as Once Upon a Child. We have one in our area called Little Pampered People, which I love. There are deals to be had out there. You can easily get by on, I’d say, $800 or far less depending on how much gear you want and whether or not you breastfeed. (And I’d highly recommend that you breastfeed–it’s great!)
Good luck and congrats on the baby!

Well it depends..are you going to have a baby shower? if so than you get alot of your bigger gifts there and diapers but if you are doing all this on your own completely with no help what so ever than you will need alot of money in the first few months..You will need to buy a carseat, stroller, bassinet, crib, diapers, clothes, high chair (you can buy that down the road though), pack n play, baby bath tub, formula unless you are breastfeeding, bottles and pacifiers…um you will probably need around at least a few thousand..I would have at least $2000..good luck and congrats!

Well if you are breastfeeding, then that is the food out of the way compeltely so that may take perhaps a hundred off your back.
Newborns or babies don’t exactly need a lot, it is more physcial attention they need.
Okay soyou have food already (unless you bottle feed you will need a strelizer, bottles and powder) a bed and matress, a proper one could cost around £200..
You don’t need pillows or blankets, but you need nappies which cost qquite alot and perhaps some wee clothes suits for the baby.
All in all I think you coul dbe looking at around…
    £350 – £400

Lol its depends. We didnt buy diapers until our son was 5 months, all from the shower. But we spent a good 3-4 grand the first few months. We THOUGHT we had everything and we had to run out and get things here and there and not only that we had tons of doctors appointments, regular and needed appointments! Formula on top of that….$$$$$$$
    EDIT
i didnt even buy clothes I had so many, but my son is now in 12 months clothes, so I had to keep buying onesies tht fit he grew through them so fast, same with socks!

Are you planning to breastfeed? (this is free)
2 packs of nappies every week. Pack of wipes per week.
a pram? car seat? Baby bouncer.
Mosses basket or what i did was have a cot straight away.
    20 x 0-3month babygrows. 10 cardigans, 100 bibs! blankets, sheets.
If you did it on budget and picked up some 2nd hand bits you could save a fortune! say minimum of 1,500. but you would have everythink and some that will last till they are older.

You can really get away with spending 1000 or less!
Shop at thrift stores, goodwills, craigslist, etc.
You can get all you need for cheap.
Diapers for 3 months might run you about 250 for the whole 3 months.
Breastfeed if you can so you don’t have to buy formula.

I would say at least 5,000 or so. There is so much to get. Thats why baby showers are great. Now that I think about it, it might be much more.
