The best protection is to not install anything on your computer. You dont need a hard drive for your computer to run. If you dont have one you cant get infected. Put in 2 gigs of ram and run a Live Linux Distro such as Knoppix right from your DVD drive. Load the whole kernel to ram and you have a smoking fast machine that isnt likely to get infected and when you shut it off everything is gone.
PS: the Knoppix Operating System is completely free unlike any LEGAL version of Windows

AVG, is junk. Here are two excellent free antivirus programs. I would recommned Avira from Germany as it has a very high rate of detection.
Another free excellent program from Avira Germany free for home personal use.

Avast, free home for personal use: http://www.avast.com Avast will send you the free key good for one year then you must request a new key. Has an excellent background scanner that works in real time, plus on the hour auto. Updates.
Would also recommend that you remove Spybot as it has immunization and this conflicts with all spyware program, including antivirus programs.
Install the free superantispyware. http://www.superantispyware.com Update and run an in depth scan. I use this software myself the purchased version. With the free you will have to update daily on a manual basis.
