PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – It was a fortuitous typo for the Fred Meyer retail chain.
This spring, an employee intending to order a special CD-DVD edition of R.E.M.’s latest release “Accelerate” inadvertently entered the “LP” code instead. Soon boxes of the big, vinyl discs showed up at several stores.
Some sent them back. But a handful put them on the shelves, and 20 LPs sold the first day.
The Portland-based company, owned by The Kroger Co. (KR), realized the error might not be so bad after all. Fred Meyer is now testing vinyl sales at 60 of its stores in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The company says, based on the response so far, it plans to roll out vinyl in July in all its stores that sell music.
Other mainstream retailers are giving vinyl a spin too. Best Buy is testing sales at some stores. And online music giant Amazon.com, which has sold vinyl for most of the 13 years it has been in business online, created a special vinyl-only section last fall.
The best-seller so far at Fred Meyer is The Beatles album “Abbey Road.” But musicians from the White Stripes and the Foo Fighters to Metallica and Pink Floyd are selling well, the company says.
“It’s not just a nostalgia thing,” said Melinda Merrill, spokeswoman for Fred Meyer. “The response from customers has just been that they like it, they feel like it has a better sound.”
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, manufacturers’ shipments of LPs jumped more than 36 percent from 2006 to 2007 to more than 1.3 million. Shipments of CDs dropped more than 17 percent during the same period to 511 million, as they lost some ground to digital formats.
The resurgence of vinyl centers on a long-standing debate over analog versus digital sound. Digital recordings capture samples of sound and place them very close together as a complete package that sounds nearly identical to continuous sound to many people.
Analog recordings on most LPs are continuous, which produces a truer sound – though, paradoxically, some new LP releases are being recorded and mixed digitally but delivered analog.
Some purists also argue that the compression required to allow loudness in some digital formats weakens the quality as well.
But it’s not just about the sound. Audiophiles say they also want the format’s overall experience – the sensory experience of putting the needle on the record, the feeling of side A and side B and the joy of lingering over the liner notes.
“I think music products should be more than just music,” said Isaac Hudson, a 28-year-old vinyl fan standing outside one of Portland’s larger independent music stores.
The interest seems to be catching on. Turntable sales are picking up and the few remaining record pressers say business is booming.
But the LP isn’t going to muscle out CDs or iPod soon.
Nearly 450 million CDs were sold last year, versus just under 1 million LPs, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Based on the first three months of this year, Nielsen says vinyl album sales could reach 1.6 million in 2008.
“I don’t think vinyl is for everyone; it’s for the die-hard music consumer,” said Jay Millar, director of marketing at United Record Pressing, a Nashville based company that is the nation’s largest record pressing plant.
Many major artists – Elvis Costello, the Raconteurs and others – are issuing LPs and encouraging fans to check out their albums on vinyl. On Amazon.com, one of the best-selling LPs is Madonna’s latest album, “Hard Candy”.
Some artists package vinyl and digital versions of their music together, including offers for free digital downloads along with the record.
“We’ve definitely had some talks with the major retailers about exclusives on the manufacturing end,” Millar said of United Record Pressing, which focuses primarily on independent recordings.
An avid music fan himself, Millar says he has moved to vinyl in recent years.
“Once I got my first iPod … I’m looking at my wall of CDs and trying to justify it,” Millar said. “The things I like – the artwork, the liner notes, the sound quality – it dawns on me, those are things I like better on vinyl.” He welcomed back the pops and clicks, even some of the scratches.
“I like that fact that it’s imperfect in a lot of ways, live music is imperfect too,” Millar said.
Independent music stores, which have been the primary source of LPs in recent years, say many fans never left the medium.
“People have been buying vinyl all along,” said Cathy Hagen, manager at 2nd Avenue Records in Portland. “There was a fairly good supply from independent labels on vinyl all these years. As far as a resurgence, the major labels are just pressing more now.”
In this game, big retailers aren’t necessarily competing head to head with independent sellers’ regular clientele of nostalgic baby boomers, independent label fans and turntable DJs.
“I cannot see that Best Buy or Fred Meyer would order the same things we would,” Hagen said. “They aren’t going to be ordering the reggae, funk, punk or industrial music.”

Anybody Working From Home And Actually Making Money Doing So?

I am stuck at home 99.9% of the time being the primary caregiver for my 80 year old mother who doesn’t get around too well any more and my 8 year old son who is the “adhd poster child”! The monotony alone is killing me but the added stress of not having medical and dental insurance for myself and my son and not having an income, aside from child support, to build retirement on is sure to steal my last breath away. I spend a lot of time online and have completely overwhelmed myself with the vast majority of resources and information for work from home opportunities.
I’ve purchased prebuilt websites which were supposed to “be fully functional and easily maintained through the pre built control panel which is self explanatory”, I’ve “built my own” websites (not like a webmaster but through, for example, Tip Top Website), I have websites through dropshippers in which I’ve paid for hosting and my own domain name, I have an ebay store (stocked mostly with electronics through a dropshipper) and a jewely store (through another dropshipper). My main problem with these seems to be marketing/page views/ranking. Every month a handful of people find my ebay store by doing a specific item search on ebay but this has not resulted in many sales.
I have a Membership Dating Website, a Game Cheats Website and an Online Games Website. Here my main issue is complete ignorance of Cpanel which is not self explaining itself to me…lol…so I can’t figure out how to set up membership pricing, billing, collection or anything else. Again, here I have a major problem with marketing/page views/ranking. How do I get people to my dating site? or game site? or g

Happy Wednesday!
So I’ve noticed that Fox is ramping up the marketing machine and when I checked the calendar, I saw why…
American Idol starts in nearly a month from now.
We all know what this means both offline (for me, I know that people here in the office will be buzzing non-stop, and TV and radio will be unable to speak of anything else) and online…right here in our R&P home. If it’s at all like Rock of Love, I don’t know if I’m ready for the onslaught of AI questions and insanity here.
So how does someone prepare for this? Is there a combination of vitamins or any preemptive care that will help? Are there any exercises or training that can be done physically? Should we go out and stock up on bottled water, bread and batteries, and board up the windows?
What will you do to prepare for American Idol?

Transition From Expensive Broker To Self Serve Budget Broker?

Here’s my situation, I currently have some money in a combination of Roth IRA accounts and also non-tax-sheltered investments with someone who calls himself a financial advisor with VSR. He gets a commission based on what he has me buy. I don’t like this arrangement because he wants me to buy and sell too often. I’m always having to fill out capital gains/losses on my taxes because of the high frequency of how often he wants me to move my money around. I’m 35, and I just want my stuff to sit, and then only buy when I have new money to invest.
I’m not asking what I should do with my money, nor am I asking if I should get away for this person. I’ve either already made the decision to take my money out of the expensive advisor. I’m only giving all this information for background. I hate it when people ask questions on here and don’t give any background. The questions I have today are 2 things.
1. What kind of self-serve online broker do you suggest. I’m specifically looking for something that has a low fee for buying mutual funds. I don’t plan on buying individual stocks. The “free” site Zecco looks good to me, but it costs $10 to buy a mutual fund. What discount broker is good for somebody who wants to buy mutual funds with the intention of keeping them long term. Specifically, something with a low/no buy/sell fee, and no annual fees. I’m going to be in mutual funds, and have both Roth IRA’s and “regular” non-tax-sheltered accounts.
2. Once I decide what brokerage company to go with. What process would I go through to smoothly move my money away from the expensive personal financial advisor, and to the discount broker? I don’t want to sell what I have because I don’t want to do any more capital gains/losses than I have to. I have about half of my total “portfolio” in a money market account right now (long story – not important). I want to wait to buy mutual funds with it after I open the discount brokerage account.
I will select the best answer, not necessarily the first answer, so please take your time.

401(k) – Do I Need To Invest In A Fund?

I just signed up for a 401(k) [Fidelity] through work, and I will receive matching funds. When I go online to choose how much I want to invest, I am given a choice of 7 funds. I do NOT want to invest in any of them now. I fully believe that the market is going to pull back even more, and if I invest, I will lose $$$.
1) Can I invest in individual stocks?
2) Do I need to invest in those funds?
2.5) Can I have a cash balance sitting around?

More Than Just Savings Or Cds?

I want to know what to do with my extra money that will give me more than just 5-6% in a savings account or another CD.
I am currently…
- Maxing out my 401k ($15,500/yr)
- Fully funding a Roth IRA when I fall under the income limit (4k/yr)
- Fully funding a non-deductible Traditional IRA to roll over to a Roth in 2010 when I’m over the income limit (4k/yr)
- Have 6+ months of emergency living expenses in an online savings account earning 4.5%
- Have multiple CDs earning around 5%
- Have some money in a brokerage account to buy stocks for fun and speculative picks (meaning I wouldn’t care if I lost it all)
- Investing in 529 plans for my niece and nephew.
- Giving >10% of my income to charities
I’m single and don’t have a lot of expenses and I want to do more with my money than just have it sit in savings. I don’t have enough to purchase property, though (not that I would in this market right now).
Any advice?

I Want To Join The Service…please Advice.?

Sorry guys, this is going to be a little long.
I am 24 yo, with an Assoc. Degree in Fashion Marketing and Management (grad. 2003). Pretty much, I am not working on my field because I was never interested (entered college at 16yo- maybe i was too young to take things seriously), and the chances of going back to college is 0 to none because I dont know what to study, have bad credit etc. I’m stock in a dead end job and feel like there’ has to be more out there I can be learning and experiencing. I was married to a US Marine (active-9 yrs) and I mentioned him the thoughts of me joining the service a couple of times but he always convenced me not to. Last night, I went to bed at 3;30am (to wake up at 6am) because I couldnt stop thinking about it. I feel like I have nothing to lose and so much to gain. I wrote down on a piece of paper why should and shouldnt join. Turns out I have 27 reasons to join and only 4 I shouldnt. I have 2 sisters (profesionals) and I feel like a loser because I havent acomplished anything I, nor my family, could be proud of. I want to challenge myself, travel, hungry to learn etc. I already filled out the form online for more information, but I’m curious about my age and my reasons to want to join. I havent spoken to anyone about this, because they wouldnt expect this from me (most people think im the clown of the crowd/clumpsy/weak/even dumb/irresponsible). Can someone help me please? Am I too old to join? Maybe Im just trying to escape my real life, but this is not the first time I’ve thought of this. Is the military for certain type of people (strong will/not lazy) or do they really make you be that way?
Any advices or info will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I do want to study and learn, but not in a reg college. I feel that’s not for me anymore. I dont want to get another student loan (if i still qualif w my credit) when I dont even know what to study (make same mistake again). Plus, this economy is horrible right now and finding another dead end job will be hell. I want to focus on something and know that I’ll be working on the field once I’m done. I want to proof myself I can do it, I want to be proud of myself and make my family proud.

How Do I Begin Investing In Individual Stocks And Funds In Asia, Specifically China?

This is to anyone with some Global investment knowledge. I am interested in diversifying in stocks in Aisa. I have been trading funds and stcks domestically for maybe 3 or 4 years so I have some knowledge but I want to also put some money in China to hedge some of my losses that I am taking domestically, plus, it will help my knowledge going forward as global markets heat up in other developing countries. 1) What exchange do you use to trade Chinese stocks? I see some listed in actual Chinese exchanges and others on US and HK exchanges. What are the advantages? 2) Do they offer an diverse funds or sector funds? Kind of like ETF’s or Spiders I suppose. 3) What sectors do you like in the region?
I have an online trading account that offers a few different global options so you can skip thed steps of initial account setup.
